Low-voltage busbar terminal short circuit

A short circuit at a low-voltage busbar terminal generates intense electrodynamic forces that can deform busbars and damage insulation if not properly designed or tested.Causes and Characteristics

Short circuits in low-voltage busbar systems occur when a low-impedance path forms between phases or to ground, resulting in extremely high currents. The magnitude of the fault current depends on the transformer capacity, distance from the source, and circuit impedance, with the highest currents typically near the main switchboard . Fault currents at 415V systems can reach 50kA, with some installations experiencing 65kA or 80kA . These currents produce electrodynamic forces that act on the busbars, potentially causing mechanical deformation or insulation failure .

Electrodynamic Forces and Lorentz Effects

During a short circuit, the interaction of high currents in the busbar conductors generates Lorentz forces, which push conductors apart or bend them depending on the current direction and busbar geometry . These forces are strongest immediately after fault inception, during the subtransient and transient current phases, and can exceed the mechanical strength of unsupported busbars if not properly designed . Simulation tools like finite element method (FEM) and transient electromagnetic analysis are used to predict these forces, magnetic flux density, and current density distributions to optimize busbar design .

Testing and Standards

Standards such as IEC 61439-1 and BS EN 61439-6 define tests to ensure busbar systems can withstand short-circuit stresses. The Icw test evaluates the busbar's ability to endure mechanical forces during a fault, applying peak currents up to 2.2 times the RMS value for high-current systems . The busbars must remain structurally intact, with no damage to insulation or supports. Conditional short-circuit tests (Icc) assess the performance of protective devices like MCCBs and ACBs under fault conditions . Busbar trunking systems are designed with tap-off units and supports to safely distribute power while limiting the propagation of heat and fire during faults .

Design Considerations
  • Busbar supports and spacing: Proper mechanical support prevents excessive bending or vibration during short circuits .
  • Material selection: Copper or aluminum conductors with adequate cross-section reduce thermal and mechanical stress.
  • Protective devices: Correctly rated fuses, MCCBs, or ACBs ensure rapid fault clearance, minimizing electrodynamic stress.
  • Simulation and verification: Transient electromagnetic simulations help predict Lorentz forces, flux density, and losses, guiding design optimization .
Summary

A low-voltage busbar terminal short circuit is a high-risk event that combines extreme currents and electrodynamic forces, potentially damaging busbars and insulation. Compliance with IEC 61439-1 and BS EN 61439-6, proper mechanical design, and simulation-based verification are essential to ensure safety, structural integrity, and reliable operation under fault conditions .
